Starting in September 2026, Free School Meals (FSM) eligibility is expanding to all children in households receiving Universal Credit. At the same time, transitional protections will end, and entitlement will be based on current household circumstances rather than historical eligibility.
Key National Changes for September 2026
Expanded FSM: All children whose families receive Universal Credit will be eligible, regardless of the previous income threshold.
Targeted FSM: This continues to be the criteria for Pupil Premium, requiring households to have earned incomes under £7,400.
Universal Infant FSM: Children in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 will continue to receive free lunches automatically.
How to Apply and Check Your Eligibility
New Applicants: Submit a form to have your status assessed for September.
Existing Recipients: Because transitional protections are ending, current recipients will have their eligibility rechecked automatically if they have applied for free school meals via the Online Checking System and have an Application number.
