Saracens training

A selection of Rugby Academy students had the privilege of attending a training session at Allianz Park the home of Saracens Rugby Cub the current European Champions and league champions! The session started with a warm up then straight into the session held on the 4G Allianz Park pitch. The session focused on the break down, something that the Folkestone Rugby Academy coaches thought would be beneficial to our team. The students worked in two groups then worked as a team coming together at the end for a team run through. Once the training had finished we was then given a tour of the stadium, starting in the Saracens changing room then moving on to the new stand. The Rugby Academy squad where then shown Saracens trophy cabinet, which is very impressive!

Twickenham Stadium

The Rugby Academy students visited Twickenham Stadium the home of the English Rugby Union the home of England Rugby! The day started with a workshop focusing on developing coaching with young adults delivered by a RFU specialist coach. Once the workshop had finished the tour started, the group visited the executive boxes at the very top of the stadium with a very expensive price of £80k + for a box. The tour then moved onto the VIP sections of the stadium, starting with the royal box, of which you have to be invited into by someone senior in the RFU then onto a members only bar of which you can only visit if your royal family or have been the RFU chief executive. The tour finally moved onto the home changing rooms, the pitch side tunnel and then onto pitch side, unfortunately no one is allowed on the grass though.

Rugby Academy students will have the opportunity to complete the IRB Rugby Ready course this year. The Rugby Ready is designed to give our young adults the first steps into becoming rugby coaches. The course is a mixture of theory and practical focusing on a number of aspects in rugby coaching such as match preparation and physical conditioning, correct technique, injury prevention and the tackle to name a few. The Rugby Ready will be delivered by a RFU Community coach here at Folkestone Academy.

Rugby Academy Students Appear on ‘Rugby Tonight’

A group of fortunate Rugby Academy students were given the opportunity to attend BT Sport’s TV show, ‘Rugby Tonight’. The live show was filmed on Wednesday 1st February at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and hosted by Craig Doyle, Lawrence Dallaglio (Wasps and England), Martin Bayfield (Northampton Saints and England) and Ugo Monye (Harlequins and England) along with special guest ex England captain Chris Robshaw.

On arriving at BT Sport HQ the team were whisked off for rehearsals led by Lawrence Dallaglio who explained exactly what demos would be taking place. The rugby forward students were asked to participate in a maul demo, whereby Chris Robshaw explained and demonstrated with the team alongside Lawrence.

The live show started at 8pm with some extremely nervous faces dressed in their new rugby kit. As a team we welcomed Chris Robshaw into the studio by forming a rugby tunnel and then moved around the studio, directed by the studio floor manager, appearing as the audience throughout the whole show. When the time came for the team to demonstrate the maul it was delivered with class and professionalism.

As the live show continued, the Rugby Academy students were divided into small groups which found them in almost every camera shot in their new bright orange kit. The show came to a close at 9.30pm and the team where offered photo opportunities with the rugby superstars.

Andrew Ballen, Rugby Academy Coach, accompanied the students on the visit and comments: “The whole experience will be remembered for a very long time by all the Folkestone Rugby Academy students. The chance to stand, not just in a room, but to have conversations with rugby superstars will not be forgotten. Congratulations to all students involved who represented Folkestone Rugby Academy with pride.”

Rugby Academy vs CrossFit!

On Wednesday 1st March 2017, the Folkestone Rugby Academy took on a surprise CrossFit training experience. The Rugby Academy coaches told the team to pack their training kits and prepare for an outing. They had no idea where they were going or what was waiting for them.

Upon arrival at the CrossFit Stone Towers training facility, the boys were left speechless as the thought of CrossFit is quite unique and can be extremely difficult.

The boys met the trainer Ross and were soon into the strength aspect of the workout, the Front Squat. This was based on form and building to find a 3 rep max effort. The workout of the day (WOD) came next. This consisted of 4 burpees jumping over the barbell and as many thrusters as possible every minute for 15mins. The boys and both coaches gave it their all and the team left with a tired sense of achievement at the conclusion.

This experience is just another example the Rugby Academy’s integrity and determination of taking on challenges and trying their absolute best.

Well done boys!
