KS3 Literacy Curriculum

Teaching and learning in the Year 7 and Year 8 Literacy Curriculum now follows a model of literacy development entitled ‘Talk for Writing’.  Talk for Writing, developed by Pie Corbett and supported by Julia Strong, is a powerful teaching and learning approach that is based on the principles of how children learn. It enables children to imitate the key language they need for a particular topic orally before they try reading and analysing it.

The teaching and learning modules in the Year 7 and Year 8 Curriculum now place a whole text at the centre of each unit of learning. This means that every student will have read twelve key texts by the end of KS3. Every text is connected with a particular text type; the students will learn how to structure and produce independent writing in the same style.

The KS3 Literacy Curriculum promotes ‘pride in presentation’ and every day students participate in a handwriting exercise.  This ensures that students have high expectations of themselves with the intention that each student pursues excellence in presentation across all of their subjects.

Every Year 7 & 8 student engages in daily reading which involves being listened to and being read to.   This important activity provides a vehicle to facilitate accelerated progress in both reading and writing.  We also encourage students to read at home every night to support this progress and in return, students are awarded with extra credits.
