Students at The Folkestone Academy choose their Options at the end of Year 8, guided by teaching staff to follow the correct pathway.
It is important to recognise that moving into Year 9 means starting a full range of courses that will lead to qualifications.
There are two main types of qualification. GCSE qualifications are primarily assessed through a combination of final examination and controlled assessments, which are essentially coursework assignments written under examination conditions. BTEC qualifications are primarily assessed through coursework but all have an element which is externally assessed through an examination.
All students follow a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science and either History or Geography, all of which are GCSE qualifications. The core curriculum also includes PE which does not carry a qualification.
In addition, students are able to choose three subjects to follow, which may be a GCSE or a BTEC qualification.
Before making choices it is important to read the information on all the available courses.
