Closing the Gap Strategy 2016 - 2017

Having identified the main barriers to learning of our Disadvantaged Students, analysed the Pupil Premium spend of a number of Academies; read research and best practice reports, Folkestone Academy’s strategy for ‘closing the gap’ between Disadvantaged and Non-Disadvantaged Students’ progress and achievement will be to address:

Barriers to future attainment (for pupils eligible for PP)

In-school barriers:

1.                   Attendance

2.                   Low aspirations

3.                   High ability pupil premium pupils’ aspirations

Intervention

Rationale for approach

Measuring Impact

Low Attendance

A range of intervention strategies to target key groups of students with poor attendance including:  1-1 mentoring;

Department of Work and Pensions working with KS4 students with poor attendance;

parent meetings and sessions with SLO;

attendance Challenges for all amber band students (90-96%) for all Houses.

It is very clear that student achievement and progress is directly linked to attendance.  Working with small groups of students enables us to identify individual reasons for lack of attendance and tackle these directly.

In school attendance data.

Low Aspirations

Range of CEIAG activities across KS3 and  KS4 groups to bring pupil awareness to the range of opportunities and careers that are available.  This will include visits to universities and places of work; outside speakers and CEIAG based activities.

Published research indicates through the use of statistical analysis that a greater volume of school-mediated employer engagement and other CEIAG activities is associated with better economic outcomes, demonstrating relationships between the number of school-mediated teenage engagements with employers and CEIAG activities significantly reduced incidences of being NEET and higher earnings.

Students on appropriate courses. Reduction in the number students registered as NEETS.

CEAIG student questionnaire results.

High ability pupil premium pupils’ aspiration.

‘Reach Your Peak’ intervention High Ability Year 7 & 8 students to support the creation of a culture of ambition and aspiration

Providing PP student with the opportunity to experience cultural and educational opportunities they would not normally experience to broaden their horizons and outlook.

A range of data will be collected including assessment, behaviour and attendance.
